About Confluence Church

Twelve people and a keyboard

We started in a living room in 2009. Today Confluence is one church in three Pittsburgh neighborhoods and online, and it still runs on the same idea.

Our story

Where it came from

2009

A living room

Marcus and Elena Reid invite ten friends over on a Sunday night in Lawrenceville. Twelve people, one keyboard.

2011

The gym

The neighborhood community house rents us its old gym. We still meet under the same basketball hoop.

2014

The Depot

A 1911 freight depot on the North Shore becomes our second home and the place for citywide nights.

2019

The Marquee

A 1951 movie theater in the South Hills opens its doors on Sunday mornings. Popcorn optional.

2020

Online

A camera on a tripod in 2020 became a full location with its own pastor and chat hosts.

Our mission

Helping Pittsburgh find its way to Jesus, and to each other.

Lead pastors

Marcus & Elena Reid

Marcus spent ten years as a high school history teacher before he ever preached a sermon. Elena studied social work at Pitt and still volunteers with the county foster care program.

They have three teenagers, one very old Subaru and strong opinions about the best pierogi in the South Hills.

Care and prayer

Come and see

Pull up a chair

Nothing explains Confluence better than a Sunday morning. Pick a location and come as you are.

What we hold on to

Four things that shape every room, every budget and every Sunday.

Jesus first

We point to Jesus before we point to programs. Everything else is a way to help people meet him.

Neighbors, not visitors

Our buildings belong to the blocks around them. The doors open on weekdays too.

Small inside big

Nobody should have to stay anonymous. Groups and teams are where a big church gets personal.

Give it away

Ten cents of every dollar leaves the building the same month, to partners across the city.

Beliefs

What we believe

The short version. Our full statement of faith is available on request.

God

God is one, eternally Father, Son and Spirit. He created all things and is still at work restoring them.

Stories

Heard in the lobby

My daughter got baptized and I tagged along, sitting in the very back row. Two years later I am out in the lot every Sunday at 8:15 with the parking team.

Portrait of Gloria, smiling

I moved across town after forty years in one house and knew nobody. The Tuesday group in Lawrenceville found me before I found them.

Lawrenceville

James laughing with his young son on his shoulders

Our son came seven weeks early. People we barely knew brought dinner for six weeks straight. That was when it stopped feeling like a building.
